Alfred Pennyworth’s story is nearly as old as that of Batman himself. The new series Pennyworth kicks his backstory up a notch, exploring the back history of one of the most enduring characters in comics.

How did Alfred Pennyworth become a member of the Wayne family? In the comic books it’s canon that he was a WWII vet, involved in assisting the French resistance. In Batman: the Animated Series, he’s shown to still maintain contact with MI6. How did he go from war hero to butler?
This new TV series shows how Alfred came to work for the Wayne family, eventually becoming Master Bruce’s trusted family retainer and foster father. Because Alfred Pennyworth has had his back story rewritten several times already, the screenwriters are not as constrained by canon and can explore this fascinating character’s history in unexpected ways.
Jack Bannon stars as Alfred Pennyworth. You may have seen him previously as Sam Thursday in Endeavour. Bannon has big shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of Alan Napier, Michael Gough, Sir Michael Caine, Jeremy Irons, and of course Sean Pertwee in Gotham.
The series features Ben Aldridge ( Lawrence in the science fiction thriller Titan) as Dr. Thomas Wayne. Martha Wayne (maiden name Kane in honor of Batman creator Bob Kane) will be played by Emma Paetz (Catherine Rawson in Gentleman Jack).
Emmy-nominated producer/director/writer Danny Cannon (currently the executive producer of Gotham) will be the executive producer of Pennyworth and directed the pilot episode.
Pennyworth will debut on ePix, a premium cable and satellite television network on Sunday, July 28, 2019.
