In 1986, Tom Cruise thrilled audiences as fighter pilot Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun. In 2020, he’ll reprise the role as Captain Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. In the trailer, a rear admiral points out that after thirty years in uniform, multiple combat medals and citations, and being the only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the past forty years, he should be an admiral himself by now. Yet he is unable to earn promotion, refuses to retire, and despite his best efforts, hasn’t managed to kill himself yet.
Tom Cruise starred as Jack in Legend, Lestat in Interview with the Vampire, and Ethan Hawke in the popular Mission: Impossible series. He now returns to his roots as Maverick. Val Kilmer (Madmartigan in Willow) also returns as Iceman. Unfortunately, Michael Ironside (Captain Oliver Hudson in seaQuest 2032, Ham Tyler in V) is not back as Jester.
Jennifer Connelly (Jenny in The Rocketeer) is a pilot, call sign “Phoenix”. Since Kelly McGillis is also not returning, it seems safe to guess despite Navy fraternization rules, Connelly may be Cruise’s love interest.
“The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction.”
“Maybe so, sir. But not today.”
I doubt he’ll go extinct in this movie, or it will be a fairly short movie. The movie is currently in post-production and is scheduled to be released June 26, 2020.

If you’re in San Diego for ComicCon, you can go to Kansas City Barbeque, where the sleazy bar scene was filmed for the original Top Gun. Their French fries are excellent.
