What is it about The Addams Family that appeals us so much? Here’s the first full trailer for the first animated Adams Family feature film – titled, appropriately, The Addams Family.

Trailer park

In the new trailer, we see all the footage from the original teaser, but with some new scenes – though it’s not so much a mood piece as many trailers are, but a supplement. We get extra scenes, mostly showing how hard the Addams family has to work to fit in, and what a horrible job of it they’re really doing – and of course, deadly mayhem follows their every move.

Adhering strongly to the character designs established by originator Charles Addams in 1932, this version of The Addams Family is perhaps closest to the original source material.

Why does The Addams Family appeal to us so much? Especially for those of the geeky persuasion, they are us. We all feel a little estranged from our fellow humans, but geeks and nerds in particular feel this. We are outsiders to the mainstream, and misunderstood by the mundanes around us, sometimes to the point of being attacked for being different. The Addams Family brings this into focus for us, and makes us less afraid to let our geek flags fly – and as weird as they are, they do have one important thing in common: they love one another very deeply. They are a true family, and however strange they may seem to our eyes, that underlying truth makes them all the more appealing.

Charlize Theron features as the voice of Morticia Addams, and Oscar Isaac voices Gomez Addams. The new film’s character designs are closely modeled on the original Charles Addams drawings, and the humor is straight from his books, in a way only possible in full animation. It’s directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan.

The animation studio doing the honors is Cinesite Animation. This film is their third feature length film so far (the first two being Gnome Alone in 2017, and Trouble in 2019). With this one, though, they seem to have hit stride as a creator of fully animated feature films. Cinesite Animation is better known by the reputation of its parent company, Cinesite, which has been producing visual effects for live action films for more than 20 years.

The Addams Family stars Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, and Allison Janney as a trouble-making journalist, and is scheduled to hit the big screen on October 11, 2019.
