The final trailer prior to the release of Joacquin Phoenix’ Joker is upon us, and Warner Bros. seems to have dialed in the whole concept. Batman Begins didn’t work because it was gritty – it worked because it was down to earth, or as much as a comic book movie can be.
Remember to pause the Krypton Radio music stream via the handy controller at the upper right before you watch the video. Dueling soundtracks aren’t as much fun as you’d think.
This is the first movie in the DCEU that focuses entirely on the character of The Joker, and it’s not like any version of the iconic supervillain we’ve seen before. Phoenix takes the character in a completely new direction.
Joker is an original standalone story, only loosely connected to the rest of the DC universe. Joaquin Phoenix portrays Arthur Fleck, a man strugglign to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. He’s a clown-for-hire by day, and a stand-up comic by night, but the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings his world down around his head.
Phoenix is a three-time Oscar nominee, and stars alongside Robert De Niro, who plays Franklin in the film. The film also stars Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Frances Conroy (TV’s American Horror Story, Hulu’s Castle Rock), Shea Whigham (First Man, Kong: Skull Island), and Douglas Hodge (Red Sparrow, TV’s Penny Dreadful) among others. This film is directed by Oscar nominee Phillips (“Borat,” “The Hangover” trilogy) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Oscar-nominated writer Scott Silver (“The Fighter”), based on characters from DC. The film is produced by Todd Phillips and Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper under their Joint Effort banner, along with Oscar nominee Emma Tillinger Koskoff (The Wolf of Wall Street).
Joker will be in theaters nationwide October 4, 2019.
