British actor Will Poulter has been cast to star in Amazon’s upcoming series based on J. R.R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth books. His exact role has not been specified yet, but Variety insists it will be a starring role. Poulter already has strong geek cred and a connection to the Inklings*.
Poulter already has significant credentials in geek interest media. He played Eustace Clarence Scrubb in The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. He also played Gally in The Maze Runner franchise. He was Mark in the horror film Midsommar. Poulter also starred as Colin Ritman in the science fiction mystery Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.
Unconfirmed reports also claim Australian actress Markella Kavenagh has also been under consideration for the role of Tyra in Amazon project. She was Cindi in the television version of the Australian film Romper Stomper, as well as for roles in the shows Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Cry. Neither Amazon nor her representatives are commenting on the on-going talks, which means it’s not a done deal yet – but things are looking really good in terms of her inclusion in the cast list.
* The Inklings were a literary discussion group at Oxford University between the 1920’s and late 1949. The Inklings were literary enthusiasts who praised the value of narrative in fiction and encouraged the writing of fantasy. Members included many academics, including C. S. Lewis, Warren Lewis (C. S. Lewis’s elder brother), J. R. R. Tolkien, and Christopher Tolkien (J. R. R. Tolkien’s son).
