After a rocky first season, Star Trek: Discovery releases its third season teaser trailer at New York Comic Con 2019.

The Discovery has lept 930 years into the future to keep a universe’s worth of data out of the hands of season 2’s big bad, the Control AI created by Section 31 that has been running amok. Michael Burnham, time traveller and unveiled as the Red Angel, is the key to everything.

There is a lot to unpack here. Burnham learns that she’s the key to hope for this far-flung future, and that the seeds of change left behind by the Federation may yet be nurtured to form a new alliance – and of course, the galaxy is once again in danger.

These teaser trailers are always a sampler of things to come, but we don’t get much in the way of context from them. We do see some tantalizing events, like a squad of Andorians, the unfurling of a new Federation standard (with far fewer stars in its center than the map disk with which we are familiar), a room full of what looks like androids similar to Commander Data of Picard’s time (they may just be some subspecies of human, we don’t actually know), and an armed assault by another group of aliens using a sort of hand cannon similar in appearance to what the Andorians had been using in the previous shot. There’s a lot of on-board camaraderie, and Saru giving a pep talk to the bridge crew. Captain Georgio is back (you’ll remember that this is the Mirror Universe version of her), trying to fit in and be relevant in this new order of things, and obviously very much in charge of what’s going on.

The second season of Discovery was so much of an improvement over the disastrous first season that we now have high hopes for the third one.

Star Trek: Discovery‘s third season premieres in 2020. That’s all we get – we have no idea of what the actual release date on CBS All Access will be, and at this point, neither does CBS or they’d have announced it. It will appear on Netflix outside the United States, and on Bell Media in Canada.
