Marvel Studios are putting all their eggs in one basket as Kevin Feige, already President, adds Chief Creative Officer to the sign on his office door. All the company’s key creative executives across film and television will now report directly to him. The consolidation means the Marvel command structure will be much more broad and flat. Already in charge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Feige will now supervise the creative direction of all of Marvel’s other storytelling and content creation platforms. As part of this, Marvel TV and animation generator Marvel Family Entertainment will move under Feige’s Marvel Studios banner.

Feige is the proverbial 500 pound gorilla. He was pivotal in resolving the standoff between Sony Pictures and Disney, with his producer and creative direction role on Spider-Man: Far from Home on full display. With that film grossing $1.13 billion for Sony, the two studios came to an agreement making Disney a 25% co-financier and gives the studio a corresponding profit share for one movie (they had originally wanted a 50% share, and Sony almost walked away from the deal).

Feige will still report to Walt Disney Co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Alan Horn and Co-Chairman Alan Bergman. Marvel Studios begins a new phase of its existence, after the unprecedented successes of its first decade, with new movement in creative ventures going toward serving up premium content for the newly launched Disney+ streaming service.

Dan Buckley will continue as President of Marvel Entertainment, where Ike Perlmutter remains Chairman. Buckley has been collaborating with Feige in publishing and television pretty much the whole time, but where he’ll continue to oversee publishing creative and editorial tasks, reporting to Feige in that role, he’ll also be responsible for publishing operations, sales, creative services, games, licensing and events, and reporting to Perlmutter where all those things are concerned. Joe Quesada will remain a creative lead for Marvel Entertainment, reporting to Buckley, as will all the other creative execs working in publishing. Once the entire business, the comic book publishing part of the vast Marvel empire has become an appendage.

Feige captained a decade’s worth of superhero movies and franchise launches without a single dud, with a collective global gross of $26.8 billion – including this year’s all time box office champion Avengers: Endgame, along with two other billion dollar films Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far from Home, following last year’s Black Panther which had also grossed $1.3 billion. Feige has also been tapped to produce and develop a Star Wars film under Lucasfilm’s Kathy Kennedy.
