As anticipation for the start of Star Trek: Picard amps up, the new uniform to be worn by Patrick Stewart in his role as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard has been revealed. Fans got a first look today at the uniform at the Destination: Star Trek convention in Birmingham, England.

From the green/gold look of Captain Kirk’s uniform, to the red/black of Captains Picard, Sisko and Janeway, the Starfleet uniform has been an icon on its own since the original Star Trek began airing in the 1960’s. The uniform itself represents fans hope for a better future for mankind and the introduction of Picard’s new outfit is an exciting moment for all of us.

The new uniform was created by Picard costume designer Christine Clark and is a strong nod to the uniforms designed by Bob Blackman. Blackman was the genius behind uniform designs in Star Trek television and film productions starting in the 1990’s. Picard’s uniform is the first new senior service member design since those used in the late Dominion War era.

One can’t help but get a little thrill at the sight of the familiar, but new, black and red. Strips of gold accent the shoulders. Rank is still placed on the collar and the Starfleet insignia/communicator above the right breast. Clark has done an amazing job of modernizing the uniform, yet keeping the feel of the old.

I don’t know about you, but I’m already looking for patterns to have one of these uniforms made for myself!

Star Trek: Picard will premier on Amazon on January 23, 2020.
