In an announcement that has made the Freefolk rejoice, Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have stepped back from Lucasfilm and their highly publicized Star Wars trilogy. The trilogy was set to launch in 2022 and was to be the first new Star Wars film after Rise of Skywalker.

“We love Star Wars,” they said in a statement. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

Reportedly their exit had to do with their multi-million dollar deal with Netflix. “There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” the GoT pair stated. “So we are regretfully stepping away.”

Despite Benioff and Weiss’ recent Emmy win, fans have been quite vocal about their opinions of the GoT pair writing and producing a Star Wars trilogy since the lackluster end of Game of Thrones. Fans have been no less vocal since the news broke of their exit, with many rejoicing and declaring this a great day for the fandom and that “the North remembers” .

These are the same guys who were developing Confederate, a pro-slavery polemic, for HBO. It was to have been a speculative series about What If The Confederacy Won The American Civil War. HBO dropped the project when this duo jumped to Netflix, with the Star Wars project still in their schedule. So far they’ve made a lot of money this year without actually getting any pages of script shot.

This still may not be the end of Benioff and Weiss’ relationship with Lucasfilms however. In her statement, Kathleen Kennedy stated she hoped to include them in the future once their schedules allow it. Meanwhile, Lucasfilms has plenty of projects to keep them occupied, including the soon to be released Mandalorian series, Rise of Skywalker, and the upcoming Obi-Wan series with Ewan McGregor. Kevin Feige has also joined up with Lucasfilm to develop a new movie, so there is no shortage of projects coming our way.
