Here’s a look at the trailer to the upcoming film, Free Guy. The film stars Ryan (DeadPool) Reynolds as Guy, an NPC in a open world video game called “Free City”, which is a combination of Grand Theft Auto and Fornite. In the game, Guy is a bank teller, working along with his friend, Buddy (Get Out‘s Lil Rel Howery). When some special source code developed by programmers Milly (Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer) and Keys (Stranger Things‘ Joe Keery) is inserted into the game by its publisher Antoine (Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi), Guy becomes aware of his world being a video game, and begins to make himself a hero, which creates a race against time to save the game before the developers can shut it down.

The film has been in development at 21st Century Fox before Disney’s acquisition, and was one of the first films to continue production under the Disney label. In addition to starring in the film, Reynolds is also producing along with Shawn Levy, who also serves as the film’s director, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Adam Kolbrenner. The story was written by Matt Lieberman, who wrote the screenplay with Zak Penn. Reynolds was quoted in saying that he hadn’t been this immersed in a project since Deadpool.

As we are still six months away from the films release, this is just an appetizer. Expect to see more info from the film as we get closer to the release date. So far, it looks like it’s going to be a fun ride, though it might make us think twice to attack an NPC who looks like Ryan Reynolds while we play a video game.

Additional cast members include, Sports Illustrated model Camille Kostek and Channing (G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra) Tatum, as well as YouTube personalities, Sean “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Iman “Pokimane” Anys, and Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott.

The film will be released July 3, 2020.

Now that we have your attention, we need your help.

If every reader and listener of SCIFI.radio tossed in just a buck a month, we could pay every one of our artists, writers, technicians and performers a living wage.

As it is, we're covering our server, music licensing and offering token pay to our writers, but pretty much everybody else is donating their time.

With your help, we can make it right. Be a hero of geekdom, and please pledge. Even a $1 a month makes a difference if everyone does it. Click here to pledge.
