It’s not easy being taken seriously as a mega-villain when you’re only twelve years old. And the Vicious Six most definitely do not take Gru seriously, especially not when one of his minions trades his future for a Pet Rock.

Minions: The Rise of Gru is the untold story of one twelve-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain. In Despicable Me 3, we learned part of Gru’s backstory. In Minions: The Rise of Gru, we learn more of how and why young Gru began his quest to become not only a supervillain, but a Gotham City-level supervillain.

The new movie from Illumination Entertainment has an A-list cast. Steve Carrell will be reprising the role of Gru, and Dame Julie Andrews is Gru’s mother. Lucy Lawless (Xena of Xena, Warrior Princess, Lucretia of Spartacus) will voice Nunchuk. Jean-Claude vanDamme (Walker in Timecop, George in Alien Uprising, Luc Devereaux in Universal Soldier) voices Jean Clawed, and Danny Trejo (Bane in Young Justice, Breacher in The Flash, Bela Latigo in Death Rider in the House of Vampires) voices Stronghold. Taraji P. Henson (Joss Carter in Person of Interest, Katherine Johnson in Hidden Figures, Yess in Ralph Breaks the Internet) will be Belle Bottom, Michelle Yeoh ( Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery, Dr. Mogue in the Avatar series, Aleta Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy 2) will be Master Chow, and Dolph Lundgren (He-Man in Masters of the Universe, Andrew Scott in Universal Soldier, Frank Castle in The Punisher, King Nereus in Aquaman) is Svengeance. Pierre Coffin returns as the voice of the various Minions.

Minions: The Rise of Gru is currently being filmed, er drawn. It is tentatively scheduled for a summer release on July 3, 2020.
