The long awaited Black Widow solo movie has been further delayed, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Variety announced. The movie was originally scheduled to be released May 1. However, with social distancing, many places are closing theaters. The Malco Theater chain has announced they will only sell tickets for one-third of the available seats, so movie patrons can risk going to the cinema while maintaining a safe distance from other movie fans. Only a few cities still have drive-in theaters. Therefore, Disney has decided it would be more prudent to delay the release of Black Widow until more people are able to actually attend the movie.
Black Widow stars Scarlett Johannson as the spy turned superheroine. It will also feature Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. It is supposed to focus on Natasha Romanoff’s deeds between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, with an emphasis on exploring her past. It was directed by Australian writer/director Cate Shortland.
This is far from the only movie to be delayed due to Covid-19. Disney has also delayed the release of the live-action Mulan and The New Mutants, loosely based on the Chris Claremont comic book. Other studios are having similar problems. The Personal History of David Copperfield, starring Slumdog Millionaire‘s Dev Patel and The Woman in the Window, starring Amy Adams (Lois Lane in Justice League and Man of Steel) and Anthony Mackie (Falcon in the MCU) have also had their releases delayed.
