One of the things you can do with an all-star ensemble cast is create an epic superhero adventure movie. The Avengers has cemented its place in cinematic history as part of the biggest single motion picture story arc ever made, with 23 films in all.

But one of the other things you can do with an ensemble cast is make a sitcom. Going from the sublime to the ridiculous, we can see our favorite team of superpowered action heroes in a whole new light once you add a laugh track. Here is YouTube creator David Schumann’s take on what The Avengers would be like if it were a 1980’s sitcom.

It’s formatted to Academy Ratio, or 1.33:1, just like televisions of the era. Using the theme to Growing Pains, the title sequence is pretty much on point, capturing the tone of 80’s sitcoms to perfection.

Then it gets to the scenes, and it works. The Avengers actually already has a fair bit of comedy in it. If you strip out the action sequences themselves and focus on the often chaotic banter amongst the team members, and add simulated audience reactions, the whole thing gets pretty hilarious. Tony Stark in particular has some of the best lines in the movie, and they’re put to good use in this edit.

This fan edit by David S. proves that there’s more to him than meets the eye. It shows that we need to keep our own eyes open for surprising new talent. The Next Big Thing can come from the most unexpected places.
