Winter is coming.

Jason Momoa became a household name in Game of Thrones, as the fierce warlord Khal Drogo, then brought the same power to the role of Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, even getting his own solo movie – but now at long last, he has been cast in the role he was born to play:

Frosty the Snowman.

Mamoa will also produce the film, along with Jon Berg and Greg Silverman of Stampede, and Geoff Johns of Madghost. Berg and Silverman were Warner Bros execs who helped shepherd the DC franchise launch of Aquaman with James Wan at the helm.

David Berenbaum, who worked with Berg on Elf, is writing the script based on the venerable character Fosty, that Momoa will embody as a CGI Frosty in the hybrid CG/live-action film.

From his role as a fearsome count in a land of ice and fire to the oceanic success we all had with Aquaman, it felt only right to realize Jason, this time, out of snow.

Silverman said: “We know Jason’s as a true human being filled with love, compassion and a deep connection to ohana — all of which is the living spirit of Xmas and Frosty.”

It seems a bit weird for Silverman to actually draw a line between the Hawaiin concept of ohana to snowmen, but there we have it.

Jason Mamoa has been otherwise pretty busy. This year, Momoa’s due to appear in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune, which is slated for release in December. He also has roles in the upcoming action film Sweet Girl and the western The Last Manhunt.

The character comes from the popular Christmas song written by Walter Rollins and Steve Nelson, and first recorded by Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys in 1950. The song has since been covered by everybody from Jimmy Durante to the Beach Boys to Willie Nelson, and was immortalized in the 1969 Rankin-Bass animated Christmas special by the same name.
