Fellow Nebula winner Adam-Troy Castro said of Brittle Innings,  ” I provide the intelligence that it is set in Minor League Baseball during the Great Depression, that its protagonist is a young player traumatized into mutism, that there is a great love story with one of the best first kisses of all time, and that there IS a fantasy element, a brilliant one central to the action, that I won’t spoil but which likely will be spoiled for you by blurbage. It will be one of the best books of your life.”

Michael Bishop, the award winning author of Brittle Innings and No Enemy But Time, has died. Fantasy writer Andy Duncan said Bishop” has created what has been called a “body of work that stands among the most admired and influential in modern science fiction  and fantasy” He won two Nebula Awards, four Locus Awards, a Shirley Jackson Award.

Michael Bishop was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, November 12, 1945. He died November 13, 2023, one day after his 78th birthday. His father was in the Air Force , and he travelled widely in his youth, attending kindergarten in Tokyo, Japan and his senior year of high school in Seville, Spain. He returned to the USA to complete his education, earning first a bachelor’s degree and later a master’s degree from the University of Georgia.

Bishop wrote over a dozen novels and over one hundred short stories. He published several collections of his short fiction and three volumes of poetry, and edited seven anthologies of other people’s fiction.

Like most English majors, he both taught and wrote. He married  Jeri Ellis Whitaker in 1969. They were blessed with two children, a son Jamie (1971-2007) and a daughter Stephanie (born 1973). Michael Bishop is survived by his wife, his daughter, and his grandchildren, Annabel and Liam, to whom we offer our condolences. He had been in hospice care, so his passing was not unexpected.
