The planned launch of the manned SpaceX Crew Dragon was scrubbed roughly half an hour before it should have gone up due to rough weather.

“NASA and SpaceX have scrubbed today’s launch attempt of the Demo-2 test flight to the International Space Station with astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley due to unfavorable weather conditions around Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. SpaceX has begun removing propellant from the Falcon 9 rocket and then the astronauts will exit the Crew Dragon spacecraft. Launch coverage will continue until the crew has left the pad for Astronaut Crew Quarters.

Our next launch attempt will be at 3:22 p.m. EDT on Saturday, May 30, from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Cancelling the launch was disappointing, but necessary. No one wanted to risk the lives of the astronauts.”

Douglas Hurley

Douglas G. Hurley was selected as an astronaut in 2000. A veteran of two spaceflights, he was the pilot on STS?127 and STS?135. Hurley holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Tulane University. Before joining NASA, he was a fighter pilot and test pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps. Hurley is currently training for the Demo 2 flight of SpaceX’s CrewDragon spacecraft, the first crewed flight for that vehicle.  He and his crewmates are worked closely with SpaceX to develop their new spacecraft systems, which will provide roundtrip crew transportation services to the International Space Station and, along with Boeing’s Starliner, return the ability to launch humans into space from United States soil.” [Nasa.gov]

Bob Behnken

Col. Robert L. Behnken, USAF, was also selected as an astronaut in 2000. He earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from CalTech. He flew aboard Space Shuttle missions STS-12 (2008) and STS-130  (2010) as a mission specialist, accumulating over 708 hours in space, including 37 hours of spacewalk time. He is married to fellow astronaut K. Megan McArthur; they have a young son. He was Chief of the Astronaut Office from 2012 to 2015. Behnken served as an aquanaut during the NEEMO 11 mission aboard the Aquarius underwater laboratory, living and working underwater for seven days.

Col. Hurley and Col. Behnken will attempt their voyage again on Saturday, May 30, 2020, if the weather is more cooperative,
